Building a Better World
At Smith-Midland, we revolutionize the precast concrete industry by developing innovative new products and licensing them across the globe.
But it’s not just our licensed products and patents that define Smith-Midland as a leader in the market. It’s what they contribute to the world around us. Traffic barriers that safeguard highway workers and motorists. Absorptive sound walls that muffle freeway noise, enhancing life in the neighborhoods beyond. Underground vaults engineered to protect vital utilities and communication infrastructure.
It’s in our DNA to push beyond normal concepts to create new technologies. Like our SlenderWall architectural panels, pioneering the path to off-site high-rise construction. Or our all-precast modular Easi-Set Buildings, universally trusted for their durability and security at industrial sites, parks, public works facilities and military bases.
Precast concrete products are what we are known for, but at our core, Smith-Midland is a place where people are developed. Where engineering, creative problem-solving, and expert craftsmanship come together to create progress. Integrity in our designs, lean manufacturing processes, a focus on safety, and quality control at every stage of production. These are the touchstones that keep Smith-Midland at the forefront.
It’s the pride in our work – our unrelenting push for excellence – that drives us every day to get better at what we do; building a safer, more sustainable, more resilient world, while enriching the lives of our employees, our customers and our communities.

Innovation and Excellence
It was an idea and an innovation that launched Smith-Midland Corporation (DE) in 1960, when it entered the marketplace as the Smith-Cattleguard Company. Founder David G. Smith developed the first precast concrete cattleguard, offering a high quality, permanent solution to a problem that had been plaguing farmers for years. Joined by his son Rodney, the Smiths grew the company into a regional precast concrete producer, continuing to introduce new products and new ways of thinking into the marketplace. From the beginning, Smith-Midland built a reputation for innovative, high quality precast concrete products backed by superior service. Although the name has changed and the products offered have increased exponentially, Smith-Midland, now in its third generation, has never deviated from the standard of excellence established at its founding.
Significant Innovations
Today, Smith-Midland’s active research and development team leads the precast industry in creating new patented products and customizing existing products. SMC’s most significant innovations are:
As Smith-Midland’s products emerged in the marketplace, they eventually became industry standards through another innovation – the concept of licensing the proprietary design of these systems for manufacture. In 1978, the company launched Easi-Set Worldwide to concentrate and expand its licensing activities throughout North America and across the globe. To further extend the reach of the company, the popular J-J Hooks brand expanded into a full-service barrier rental company in 1977. Concrete Safety Systems provides an ongoing source of revenue as the state-of-the-art barrier rental and logistics service firm in the industry. Used for road work, security and crowd control, J-J Hooks barrier can either be purchased through Smith-Midland or rented through Concrete Safety Systems, including delivery and installation.
Continuing its entrepreneurial ways, the company created Midland Design + Advertising in 1980. The in-house agency serves Easi-Set’s network of licensed producers with co-op advertising programs and supports each of the Smith-Midland (DE) companies.
Over the years, Smith-Midland Corporation (DE) has continued to diversify and expand, propelling the company to a profitable, recession-resistant profile in the construction industry. From its home base in Midland, Virginia, the company has expanded down the Eastern Seaboard with additional production facilities in Reidsville, North Carolina in 1979 and Hopkins, South Carolina in 2016. All three plants are certified by national trade associations, and are under constant expansion and modernization as lean manufacturing facilities. The three production plants combined offer an array of standard, custom and proprietary products that spans the wide ranging precast concrete industry and gives the company a wide manufacturing footprint.
