Concrete Cattleguards: A Lifetime of Service

Smith Midland cattleguard installed in a pastureFor Your Farm or Driveway

End the inconvenience of gate opening forever with the Smith-Cattleguard, a one-piece, steel-reinforced precast concrete structure built to last a lifetime.

Make any gateway on your farm convenient for vehicle travel with a permanently constructed, one-piece cattleguard that never needs maintenance or repair and is built to withstand constant use by farm machinery and heavy trucks. Originally developed to help farmers inconvenienced by constantly needing to stop their vehicles to open and shut farm gates, the Smith-Cattleguard eliminates this problem for a lifetime.

A hefty precast concrete structure that weighs more than 6,000 pounds, the Smith-Cattleguard holds up under the heaviest loads and frequent crossings. With round top rails and a cast-in footing, it is easy and inexpensive to install. The only site prep needed is a trench 7½’ wide by 6″ deep with a 2” bed of gravel or sand. Available for immediate delivery from our large inventory.

Approved for use on state roads in Virginia and many other states. It’s the finest cattleguard money can buy.

Cattleguard Installation DiagramCattleguard Installation

Excavate 1’ beyond the length and width of the cattleguard (7.5′ x 13′ for 12′ width; 7.5′ x 15′ for 14′ width; 7.5′ x 17′ for 16′ width). Depth may be varied according to conditions. A normal level farm lane would require 6″ depth with 2″ of gravel. In rough conditions, such as at the bottom of a hill or a muddy road, it’s better to set the cattleguard on the top of the road and build up to it. Generally, the higher the cattleguard the better. When digging, place the dirt on each side of the excavation in the roadway. After the cattleguard is set, use excavation dirt to build up on each side of the guard. Then cover the dirt with fresh gravel.
