The US 50 span over the Severn River Bridge in Annapolis, MD is 2,856 linear feet long and nearly 100 feet high, serving up to 125,000 drivers during peak Friday afternoons in the summer. Innovation was the key to adding a fourth traffic lane to this critical route connecting central Maryland with the Chesapeake Bay Bridges and the Eastern Shore.
Both the Smith-Carolina plant in Reidsville, NC and the Smith-Midland plant in Midland, VA have secured Approved Precast Concrete Fabricator status listings with the West Virginia DOT Division of Highways (WVDOH).
Smith-Midland Corporation (OTCQX: SMID) project announcement. The Smith-Columbia plant in Hopkins, South Carolina has signed with Dragados USA, Inc., a top 10 North American transportation contractor, to produce noise wall and posts for the NCDOT US 70 project in Durham County, North Carolina.
The Mario J. Bertolini Leadership & Innovation award was established by PCI to honor renowned engineer Mario Bertolini who passed away in 2014. The award recognizes individuals who, while in senior management positions of PCI Producer Member firms, consistently exhibited the personal and professional traits exemplified by Mr. Bertolini.
Offered as part of National Precast Concrete Association’s Precast University, the Master Precaster certificate program includes precast and prestress-specific training with comprehensive education courses for production, safety, technical, quality control and leadership. It is a hard course and a great achievement. Our three newest graduates for the Class of 2020 represent the 10th, 11th and 12th Smith-Midland Corporation Associates to achieve this recognition.
We are proud of Chris Reese, Senior Engineer for our sister company Easi-Set Worldwide, on his recent graduation from the National Precast Concrete Association Leadership Academy . Chris was chosen to join a small group of select associates from NPCA member companies across North America for the year-long program.
The National Precast Concrete Association announced the winners of their annual Best Practices Awards during the National Convention in Fort Worth, TX on March 5th. Both of Smith-Midland’s program entries won, garnering the Top prize and 3rd place.

Smith-Midland Corporation partnered with Fauquier Health last year to promote the health system’s “WorkPoint Wellness Program.” The WorkPoint Wellness Program is a corporate wellness program offered to local employers to meet occupational health needs, encourage wellness activities including preventative health screenings, educational lectures, exercise classes and more. The program seeks to help employers meet the health needs of their employees, encourage health and wellness, and avoid missed work days. Back in October, the partnership launched during Smith-Midland’s annual health fair.

A recent contract signing for an $8.28M total Army Corp of Engineers architectural design-assist project on an undisclosed Military base in Maryland brings Smith-Midland’s current production backlog total to $30.9M. The project to be delivered in 2021 with production starting in September 2020, is just one of several recently signed, including: a $2.2M Lagging panel project in Northern Virginia; a $3.22M garage at Norfolk International Airport; and several smaller projects across all three production facilities.
In late February the entire Smith-Midland Virginia family gathered to celebrate the work anniversaries of their fellow associates. Of special note was the six decades of service from Smith-Midland co-founder Rodney Smith. Matthew Smith (30 years), Dale Brooks (25 years) and Willie Riley (25 years) were also specially recognized for their dedication over so many years of service. A special invitee to this year’s event was past associate and life-long supporter, friend and family member of Smith-Midland, Merry Robin Bachetti.
