Smith-Columbia plant sees continued growth in South Carolina transportation market

MIDLAND, VA – Nov. 10, 2016 — Smith-Midland Corporation (OTCQX: SMID) project update for South Carolina: our Hopkins, SC Smith-Columbia plant recently signed two new production contracts for South Carolina Department of Transportation road infrastructure projects.

Zachry Construction ordered 80,000 linear feet of J-J Hooks precast concrete highway barrier to provide worker and driver safety during the I-20 expansion project. J-J Hooks safety barriers, which incorporate a proprietary J-Hook connection, represent the most widely specified design across North America. Zachry, a leading, privately-owned construction company with 90 years of experience, specializes in constructing large, technically-unique projects around the world.

The South Carolina DOT project, just west of Columbia and within Lexington County, will focus on widening I-20 to three lanes for 11 miles in either direction. The project will run from the U.S. Highway 378 exit west to Exit 49.

Smith-Rowe, a venerable heavy construction company with over three decades of project experience across the southeast, has contracted with Smith-Columbia for a SCDOT-specified retaining wall project along the 1-85 and I-395 corridors near Greenville, SC. Smith-Rowe will install 29,295 square feet (1,554 pieces) of Smith-Columbia precast concrete soldier pile panels.

Soldier piles and lagging panels are a time-tested earth retention technique that retains soil, using vertical piles with horizontal lagging. Typically, H-piles are driven at regular intervals along the planned excavation perimeter. Lagging consists of inserting precast concrete panels between the pile H-flanges as the excavation proceeds. Lagging effectively resists the load of the retained soil and transfers it to the piles.

These projects represent just the start of what looks to be a long road of increased infrastructure spending in the region.
