SMC Awarded Prestigious CUP Award for SlenderWall Project

MIDLAND, Va. – Officials at Smith-Midland Corporation were the recipients of the prestigious CUP award for a building project completed in Rockville, Maryland.
The company’s submission for its SlenderWall Architectural Precast Concrete Panel System, garnered first place in the National Precast Concrete Association’s (NPCA) Creative Use of Precast (CUP) Awards program for the Above Ground category. The award was presented at the Salute to Excellence Award Banquet on Saturday, February 9 in Denver, Colorado. The Gala is the closing event for the NPCA Winter Conference.
The CUP Awards Program is an annual competition for NPCA members recognizing projects promoting innovative and cost-saving advantages of precast concrete over competing materials.
The ten-story, 274-unit Jefferson at Inigo’s Crossing in Rockville, MD, was built with SlenderWall which reduced the cost and duration of the construction project while allowing the new structure to blend in with existing residential buildings located nearby. The building was clad with 106,000 square feet of SlenderWallpanels with architectural precast concrete brick second Nature finish and an architectural precast limestone finish.

The low-maintenance precast panels weigh substantially Less than either traditional precast or brick, with the interior stud wall incorporated into the SlenderWall panel. SlenderWall is the only wall system that combines four proven components: architectural precast concrete, hot-dipped galvanized welded wire, insulated Nelson anchors (ThermaGuard), and heavy guage galvanized steel or stainless steel studs, to create a single, efficient exterior wall system for new construction and renovation.
SlenderWall is designed to reduce building foundation and structure costs, shipping and installation costs, and thermal transfer. The design isolates the exterior precast concrete cladding from the structural stresses associated with wind loading, steel frame movement, expansion and contraction and seismic shock.
