We invite you to our open house on Wednesday, Oct 23rd from 11am-4pm as we celebrate Precast Days 2019 with the National Precast Concrete Association. Our event will be an up-close look at the precast manufacturing process, during which, we will demonstrate the equipment, engineering expertise and technology that goes into making precast concrete products. You will learn about the benefits of precast and have the opportunity to explore the various careers that come together to make this versatile product.
“Delmer has left the building”, as the old catchphrase goes. Mr. Delmer Blevins ruled Smith-Midland Corporation’s Welding Shop as the Supervisor for many years, and he recently decided to switch gears. He decided to retire after 32 years with the company.
Smith-Midland Corporation (OTCQX: SMID). Effective July 29th Mr. Christopher “Scott” Hicks took the helm of the Smith-Columbia precast plant as General Manager.
Carolinas AGC announced the list of construction company members who will be honored during the 2019 Annual Summit for their safety excellence in 2018. The following companies achieved a safety record that ranged between Zero loss time incidences to an annual incident rate that is below the national average for the category of work they perform.
In mid-April the entire Smith-Midland family gathered for a luncheon to celebrate the work anniversaries of their fellow associates. Of special note was the retirement of Andrew Washington who has spent over 40 years watching the growth of this place and the lives of the people he has worked with. His daily presence will be sorely missed. Queenie Webster and Carlos Martinez Chicas were equally honor for their big milestones of 30 and 20 years respectively. Every associate honored was met with heartfelt appreciation from co-workers and management alike. As each honoree was recognized a letter from their supervisor was read (see each below). Then awards were handed out, speeches made, a meal shared, and good time was had by all.
Andrew Washington - Retiring, 40+ Years
Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (ABC) awarded Smith-Midland Corporation with the prestigious Gold Level of Achievement Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) Award for 2018. The STEP Awards recognize companies for their meritorious safety performance in a given year. The award winners are determined using safety factor calculations that incorporate data from Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) reports and require companies to have extensive programs covering personnel training, on-the-job performance, documentation and evaluations.
For the third year in a row a SMC associate has been accepted in the National Precast Association Leadership Academy. Alex Burkhart, Associate Project Manager at the Virginia plant will participate in the yearlong training process; sharpening management skills, building industry association experience and networking abilities.
We had a great opportunity to tour Cambridge Engineering yesterday morning for a Lean Tour. Their employee engagement was real and infectious. Thanks to all of you, the Smith-Midland Team is working to empower all of our Associates to be Lean thinkers and to “fix what bugs them”! - Matthew Smith
We are proud of Alan Pritchard, Smith-Midland’s Plant Manager for his graduation from the National Precast Association Leadership Academy. A year-long training process, Leadership NCPA selected just 9 precast professionals from across North American to participate in multiple sessions designed to sharpen their management training, industry association experience and networking abilities, creating future leaders in our industry.
Our new Smith-Carolina precast concrete plant in Reidsville, NC continues forward.
